Sudden Cardiac Arrest First Aid

Sudden Cardiac Arrest

Emphasising the importance of access to defibrillators and effective first aid

Following the weekend’s incident involving Christian Eriksen, Hampshire FA would like to emphasise the importance of access to defibrillators and effective first aid at all levels of the game.

On Saturday 12th June 2021, Christian Eriksen collapsed during Denmark’s UEFA EURO 2020 group match against Finland. Eriksen had suffered a cardiac arrest and it was only thanks to the fast and effective response of the players, match officials and medical team on-hand, as well as immediate access to a defibrillator, that he is now in a stable condition.

Anyone can suffer from a cardiac arrest on the pitch. Christian Eriksen is a prime example of this, being a young, professional player, accustom to playing high-intensity football on a frequent basis. Having persons on-hand who can recognise and respond effectively to a sudden cardiac arrest, with easy access to a nearby defibrillator, is vitally important at all levels of the game to ensure the safety of all participants.
