Hampshire FA Saturday Trophy Final Winners Brading Town

MATCH REPORT: Hampshire FA Saturday Trophy Final

Shanklin v Brading Town

HAMPSHIRE FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION SATURDAY TROPHY CUP FINAL

Shanklin 0 – Brading Town 4

The last of the 2019-2020 Hampshire County cup finals was played on the Isle of Wight on Saturday 6th June 2021 at Beatrice Avenue the home of East Cowes Victoria Football Club.

Brading had most of the early play with Jordan Browne and Dan Vale combining well to set up Barry Calvert at the far post but he failed to get his foot to the ball and a few minutes later he forced the Shanklin 'keeper Dan Ward into a good save. Ward was soon in action again saving from Josh Younie.

Gradually, Shanklin got back into the game and Brading defender Macauly Barnes blocked a shot from George Carter-Knight.

The breakthrough for Brading came in the 23rd minute when Barry Calvert moved down the left flank, cut into the box and chipped a defender and Ward for the opener. Shanklin came back when Peter Wilson slipped the ball through to Jason Smythers but his cross-cum-shot was well held by 'keeper Will Hunt.

Just before half-time it looked as if Shanklin were back in the game when a Carter-Knight corner looked goal-bound but Hunt did well to push the ball out.

Early in the second half Shanklin received two blows which in effect lost them the final. Firstly Wayne Newnham was sent off for a late tackle in the 51st minute and Jason Smythers collected a second yellow and then red card in 64th minute for a mistimed tackle.

Brading doubled their lead in the 72nd minute when Barry Calvert had a shot saved but which rebounded to Jordan Browne who set up Dan Vale to score from close range. There were calls of 'offside' but unfortunately the Vic's VAR system had broken down and the goal stood!

Substitute Oli Wilson put the game beyond Shanklin with a third goal after winning the ball on the edge of the box in 76th minute and Vale wrapped up the tie in 78th minute when a good one-two move by Browne and Calvert set him up for an easy tap in.

Brading Town became the first winners of the Hampshire Trophy in their 150th year since formation and the record book tells that they also won it three times before under its old guise as the Hampshire Intermediate Cup in 1972, 1973 and 1976.

The match was sponsored by Child Trophies and the Referee was Derek Pratt assisted by Frank Southwell and Chris Cass and the Fourth Official was Calum McFarlane. The Player of the Match Award went Barry Calvert of Brading Town.
