Peter Symonds College in Winchester hosted the hugely popular, educational and enjoyable Football Futures Leadership Day. Football activities in the disciplines of Coaching, Refereeing and Building Confidence were facilitated by the Hampshire FA Young Person’s Forum (YPF) to 35 young leaders.

The day was kicked off by Richard Cheetham MBE, who came to the event with a vast range of experiences to share with the group from his roles with British Cycling, England Handball, Saracens and Fulham FC. Cheetham engaged the group with his building confidence activity which involved creating a starting XI of positive mental attributes required from great leaders in football, both on and off the pitch.

As a group, a strong 4-4-2 was built with comparisons to past and present England players such as Steven Gerrard, John Terry and Harry Kane. Cheetham closed off his session with an innovative game called “Thumbs”, one which left the group with smiles on their faces.

After a short break, our own chairperson Jake Ashton took the lead on a “You’re the Ref” quiz, where the group watched real life football incidents and had to decide themselves what call they should make; the winner Josh Cox left with the thought that they may be the next Howard Webb as well as a £50 course voucher.

The day continued with Mike Antrobus, Hampshire FA’s County Coach Developer, taking the lead on the Coaching Workshop. After taking part in and assessing Mike’s session, the young leaders got an opportunity to lead sessions themselves on a topic of their choice. We saw sessions on counter-attacking, combination play and much more, with the YPF assisting groups in their practices.

To wrap up the day, Jake conducted a reflection quiz using Kahoot, the reflection quiz gave the young leaders the opportunity to recap what they had learnt throughout the day, Jimmy Crook, Connor Lawless and Co came out on top . Each YPF member, plus Dan, Richard and Mike all nominated who they thought the most enthusiastic, engaged and inspirational young leaders were on the day. The winners were Freya Jones, Flynn Powell, Kelci Rose Bowers, Niall Powell, Brandon Leslie and Louis Faith. The winners collected a wide range of prizes ranging from Hampshire FA jackets to discounted coaching courses worth £250. The day was a tremendous success and set the group up for a bright future beyond playing in football.
