Corfe Mullen United Juniors 1 Southampton Saints Girls 1 – Southampton won 5-4 on penalties
The Saints were defending the cup they won last season. The final took place on Sunday 2nd April 2017 at
Alton Town.

The firs half saw two evenly matched teams with chances falling to both sides but neither were able to find
the net.

Aimee-Rose Collier looked to have put Corfe ahead early in the game but shot at 'keeper Maia Grannum
who saved.

At the other end Corfe 'keeper Mia North made two great one-handed to keep the Saints out.
Corfe nearly scored when Grannum came off her line and missed the ball, Hannah Ansell hooked the loose
ball at the empty net but it was cleared off the line.

At the other end Saints' Lilly Merry rolled the ball across the top of the Corfe net.

As the game swayed the other way Corfe's Katty Scadding put a free kick over the bar.

Libby O'Dell for the Saints put in a long range shot which North made a good save.

Just before half time both sides had another chance to take the lead. Saints' Merry hit the post with a free
kick and Corfe's Ansell hit the side netting.

The breakthrough came early in the second half when O'Dell broke free and slipped the ball past North to put
the Saints ahead (41st minute).

The goal gave the Saints the momentum they needed and Ellie Elsey put a shot over the bar and from a far
cross Alex Collighan missed a sitter.

As Corfe began to run out of steam and tactics the Saints piled on the pressure but they were handed a
lifeline when they were awarded a penalty in the 77th minute which was despatched by Katie Scadding.

Both sides then went winner but defences dominated and at the final whistle the match went to penalties.
The tension of the shoot-out was soon obvious when the Referee disallowed several penalty goals due to
the movement of the 'keepers' feet. Only two of the disallowed goals were subsequently scored at the
second attempt. Eventually the Saints just about hung onto the cup winning 5-4 on penalties.

The Player of the Match was awarded to Saints' Ellie Elsey by sponsors Savvy Accounting Solutions.
The Referee was Kat Carver and her Assistants were Simone Williams and Alice Nichols. The Reserve
Official Natasha Jones.

The match was sponsored by Savvy Accounting Solutions and the match ball was sponsored by Market
