Hampshire FA Sunday Veterans Cup Final

Sponsored by R S Purdey

French Horn Academicals 2 Row United Vets 1 French Horn Academicals were defending the cup they won last season (and the season before!) but on this occasion they had to adjust to an artificial pitch at Alton Town F.C. where they faced Row United Vets on Sunday 13th March 2017. It was French Horn who had the best of the play in the first half and who settled into the rhythm of the match better than their opponents.

The first worthwhile chance of the match came from French Horn's Gary Pierce-Brummy but he shot just over the bar. French Horn continued to dominate the attack with Ian Savage, in particular, pulling the strings in mid-field. Their pressure paid off in the 28th minute when Clive Ventham curled a shot home from deep inside the penalty box. As they continued to dominate Pierce-Brummy went close after riding a tackle but 'keeper Mike Lloyd made a great save from an acute angle.

Pierce-Brummy hit the post early in the second half and a good chance fell to Savage but he screwed his shot wide. The decisive goal came in the 68th minute when a slight touch of his head from a corner, saw Savage double the French Horn's lead.

French Horn now appeared to be well in control of the final but in the 88th minute they conceded a penalty which sub Paul Reeves confidentially tucked away to set up a tense few minutes but the cup holders hung on to complete a successive hat trick of wins, some achievement.

The match Referee was Tony Foster, assisted by Ade Skeates and Alan Dawkins and the Reserve Officials  was Robert Walczak. The match was sponsored by R S Purdy Roofing Contractor and the match ball by Fleet. Man of the Match was French Horn's Ian Savage who was selected by R S Purdey.
