Hamshire FA Sunday U18 Match Report

United Services Portsmouth 3 – Bournemouth Youth Poppies 2 a.e.t.
This final between two evenly matched sides can be described as a three-parter. The first half was uneventful, the second half was better and extra time was superb!

The first half was dominated by defences with neither goalkeeper really brought into action. Both sides were guilty of giving the ball away too often.

The first chance of the game fell to the Poppies but Sam Rea lofted his shot over the bar.

A promising solo run by Pompey's Jordan Salvage ended when the ball ran away from him to the keeper.

For a period Pompey pressed and an accurate free kick by Lucas Jassal just evaded Jamal Welch's lunge. Minutes later Pompey could have taken the lead when a cross into the box left Jassal clear but he could not capitalise on the chance.

The second half opened in a more positive manner first a long range free kick for Pompey, taken by Connor Duffin was just wide and at the other end Poppies' Rea stung the keeper's hand with a shot which he failed to hold and Rafael Santos headed the loose ball over the bar.

The first goal of the game came in the 61st minute when Christian Kent, the Poppies' keeper spilt the ball which was cleared for a corner. The kick was kicked off the goal line only for Duffin to put Pompey into the lead from close range from the clearance.

Poppies hauled themselves back into the game in the 75th minute when a good move led to Sam Carter angling the ball home.

Neither side could score the winner however, and the game went to extra time.

Only four minutes in to the first half of extra time Pompey once more edged ahead. The Poppies keeper came too far off his line to let allow Asher Ajayi to get behind him and slide the ball into the empty net.

Pompey looked to have sown the game up in the 100th minute when Ashton Leigh came round the blind side from a free kick to lash the ball home.

Poppies came at the their opponents from the kick -ff of the second period of extra time and it only took them five minutes (110th minute) to peg back the lead when Adam Baxter netted from a corner.

Despite the Poppies pressure Pompey managed to hang on, however, to win the Under 18's Sunday Cup for the first time.

Man of the match was Pompey's skipper Josh Mound.

The marathon match was well run by Referee Karl Sear and his two assistants Daniel Freeman and Adam Hillier backed up by Reserve official Robert Ablitt. The match ball was sponsored by A&A Business Supplies.
