[12/05/2008] - Hampshire Schools FA U16 Girls update

The Hampshire Schools FA U16 girls’ team travelled to the County Ground, Swindon, on Friday 9 May to play Leicestershire in the final of the ESFA U16 girls’ Inter-County Championship in what was their eighth appearance in the 10 year history of the competition. They shared it with Merseyside in 2005 and won it the next two years against Leicestershire and West Yorkshire under the management team of Vanessa Raynbird and Neil Cleaver.

On a very warm day, both teams made a nervous start with the defences generally on top. However, Leicestershire created the first opportunity when Lysette Russell (Sholing School) and ‘keeper Nicky Beck (Cowes High) allowed Kirsty Farnsworth, the Leicestershire striker to beat them to the ball on the edge of the penalty area and slot it between them. However Lysette Russell recovered very quickly and managed to clear the ball just feet from the line. At the other end, Hampshire’s Rosie Goodship saw the ‘keeper off her line and a long shot was cleared but dropped off the bar in to the retreating ‘keeper’s arms.

The game swung from end to end with few real chances being created but Hampshire playing some good football and after about 10 minutes of the second half, the ball was slotted through and Becky Jane (Aldworth), an England player, showed her class and gave the keeper no chance to put Hampshire Schools ahead. In a goalmouth scramble towards the end of the game, keeper Nicky Beck made an excellent save with her feet to keep a clean sheet and see Hampshire home. In what was a very hard fought game, each player should feel very pleased with a good team performance.

[12/05/2008] - Basingstoke Town win Hampshire FA Senior Cup Final

Hampshire FA’s Senior Cup Final kicked off at 3pm on Saturday 10 May at AFC Bournemouth in front of a crowd of just over 1000. Basingstoke Town and Farnborough FC fought hard as both teams longed to take the title of the 2008 Senior Cup final winners, but it was Basingstoke that came out on top in the end.

Basingstoke Town 1 Farnborough Town 0

A CLASSIC poacher’s goal from James Taylor proved to be the winner as Basingstoke Town beat local rivals Farnborough to lift the Hampshire Senior Cup on Saturday.

At AFC Bournemouth’s Fitness First Stadium, Taylor struck after 44 minutes. He was first to react to a blistering shot from Scott Fitzgerald, which Farnborough goalkeeper Lyall Beazley spilled and Taylor jabbed home.

Basingstoke caretaker-manager Steve Richardson, in his final game in charge, made two changes to his team that started the final league game, with Bledian Fejzullahu taking over in goal from cup-tied Nick Jones, while David Tarpey replaced the injured Michael Charles, who could soon be Farnborough bound.

In a feisty encounter from the opening kick-off neither side was going to back down and the meaty challenges soon started.

In the second minute, Basingstoke captain Joe Dolan became the first of five bookings after he took out Darren Wheeler as he tried to round him.

Basingstoke forced the first corner of the contest but Fitzgerald’s shot was deflected wide.

Farnborough hit back when Ryan Hill headed wide. Then Taylor combined with Basingstoke strike partner Tarpey, but couldn’t get his shot away and Robert Saunders cleared.

The first-half battle between Taylor and defender Luke Evans boiled over with a push and shove. Then, moments later, Taylor’s late challenge on Evans earned him a yellow card.

On 26 minutes, Farnborough thought they had taken the lead, but a superb turn and shot from former Basingstoke player Paul Harkness was ruled offside.

Soon after, Wheeler’s cross hit the crossbar as the Southern League side started to get on top.

Basingstoke responded with a nice move with Steve Laidler finding Ben Wells but his cross saw Evans just beat Taylor to the ball.

At the other end, Ian Oliver flashed a shot across the face of Fejzullahu’s goal before Basingstoke opened the scoring thanks to Taylor’s close-range effort.

The lead could have been doubled just before half-time when Wells found room on the right but his cross was pushed on to the bar by Beazley and then scrambled away to safety.

A minute after the restart, Laidler was booked and he was quickly followed by Farnborough’s Evans after a crude challenge on Taylor.

A minute later, the booked player was subbed to avoid him being sent off.

Farnborough’s Wheeler wasted a glorious chance when his free header went well wide.

With only the Basingstoke voices ringing around the stadium, the Farnborough fans began to fear the worst. Even going with three up front failed to break the Basingstoke back line, where Joe Dolan and Jason Bristow proved to be as solid as rock

Farnborough did carve out a couple of chances in the last 15 minutes but substitute Michael Bartley fired over.
Just before full-time, Farnborough broke the offside trap and Saunders played in sub Byron Bubb.

However, he took one too many touches and Basingstoke defender Tyron Smith cleared the ball.

As he did so, the Farnborough striker hit the floor but appeals for a penalty were rightly turned down by referee Andrew Davies.

In added time, Matt Warner, who came on for the injured Tarpey, shot wide of the target. But Fitzgerald saved the ball going out and drilled in a shot from the byline which Beazley was forced to save with his legs.

Basingstoke Town: Bledian Fejzullahu, Tyron Smith, Tom Bird, Jason Bristow, Joe Dolan, Steve Laidler, Ben Wells, Ben Surey, David Tarpey (sub Matt Warner 61min), James Taylor, Scott Fitzgerald. Subs (not used): Sean Hankin, Connor Hamilton, Marc Vockins, Chris Waller.

Farnborough Town: Lyall Beazley, Ryan Hill, Ian Oliver, David Woozley, Luke Evans (sub Michael Bartley 50min), Leigh Rumbold, Robert Saunders, Nicholas Ciardini, Paul Harkness (sub Byron Bubb 75min), Adam Doyle, Darren Wheeler. Subs (not used): Michael Barima, Rob Marshall, Justin Gray.

[08/05/2008] - Oldest England photo?

A Derby historian, Peter Seddon, has found what is believed to be the oldest ever photograph of an England football team.

He discovered it as he scanned microfilm files of an old Derbyshire newspaper and it is said to feature the England team that played Scotland at the West of Scotland Cricket Ground in Glasgow on 4 March 1876. It was only the fifth international ever played by England, a 15,000 crowd watching them go down 3-0 to the Scots.

We know the England line-up for the fixture, though matching names to faces might prove to be problematic!

England's 'keeper was Arthur Savage, who played for a 'Crystal Palace' club that had no connection with the present-day Championship outfit. He was described as 'big and red-bearded' and 'a sound custodian and reliable'. He was beaten three times on this occasion, with two of Scotland's goals coming in the first 11 minutes.

Four of the England team played for FA Cup-winning sides. Full-back Edgar Field won it with Clapham Rovers and half-back Frederick Green won it once with Oxford University and twice with Wanderers. Hubert Heron won it three times with Wanderers and England's captain, his elder brother Frank, won it alongside him in 1876.

The England team that finally gazes out at us after all those years includes a Chartered Accountant, a Barrister, a Vicar, a District Registrar and a Colliery Proprietor.

'Custodian' Savage, probably born in Australia, may have let in three goals - but he certainly didn't pick the ball out of the net three times. They didn't have nets in those days and it was more likely that a tape was streched across the top of the posts than a crossbar.

[08/05/2008] - SBJ Sports Insurance

SBJ's specialist Football Liability Insurance Scheme (COUNTYCOVER) is designed to provide essential cover for County Football Associations and their affiliated member clubs, leagues and referees. By arranging cover as a block insurance scheme it means that premiums are more affordable to clubs and leagues at the lower levels of the game. Cover is obtained via affiliation to the County FA.

COUNTYCOVER primarily provides Public Liability Insurance. A club / league can be held legally liable if it is proven that it was negligent or failed to take ‘reasonable care’ to prevent injury to a member of the public or members of the club/league or damage to third party property.

Public Liability Insurance is designed to pay compensation and legal costs that arise if the club / league or any of its members are found to be at fault. This cover is not to be confused with Personal Accident Insurance.

[06/05/2008] - Match report: Sunday U18 Cup Final

Christchurch keeper Jason Collins had an early taste of the action saving well from Moneyfields Danny Wooden. He was also on hand to deny James Algar and again denied Wooden diving low to his right to turn the ball wide.

Christchurch responded with a fine jinking run by Tom Price requiring a fine save from Cameron Scott in the Moneyfields goal. Scott was also called into action saving well from an Adam Costello free kick. Moneyfields took the lead just before the break with Matt Barker loosing a fierce unstoppable drive from 20 yards beyond Collins. Christchurch almost equalised when Toby Williams headed over Scott from a free-kick but the ball bounced onto the crossbar and out for a goal kick.

Christchurch did equalise early in the second half when Williams bravely slid in to squeeze the ball past the advancing Scott from a Tom Price through pass. The effective Adam Costello did just enough to force Wooden to fire over the Christchurch bar as Wooden bore down on goal.

It was the pick of a number of fine challenges that bought Costello the man of the match award. Jamie Hore brought a fine save from Collins in the Christchurch goal with a slick turning volley. The final 14 minutes of the 90 brought a number of attacks from both sides however, after 90 minutes the scores remained level at 1-1. The first period of extra time passed without any further goals, despite a number of chances being created by both teams. After some good inter-passing between Moneyfields numbers 4, 7 & 9, in the 112th minute, Lucas Lothian scored what was to be the eventual winner. Final score: 2-1 to Moneyfields.

[06/05/2008] - Match report: Sunday U16 Cup Final

It took Aldershot Town barely a minute to stamp their authority on the Hampshire U16 final as Ben Gladwin superbly headed over Meon Milton keeper Billy Robertson following a free-kick. Harry Taylor saw a half chance headed wide as Meon Milton responded and Iain McCulley in the Aldershot goal was relieved his clearance from a back pass as it rebounded off the head of Rob Tambling just wide.

Rob Carr raced down the left flank beating his marker but shooting agonisingly across the face of the Meon goal. The Aldershot lead was extended when an Adam Mekke foray into the box was ended by a rash challenge from Harry Sparshatt. Ben Hutchings coolly buried the ball past Robertson from the resulting spot kick. Robertson rescued Meon saving point blank from the head of the lively Mekke.

Meon started the second half strongly and Tambling pressured Aldershot second keeper Jamie Norris into dropping the ball but was unable to finish. Tamblings persistence was rewarded on 75 minutes when his thunderous long shot crept just inside the post leaving Norris no chance.

This seemed to spur Aldershot into action and man of the match Callum Nimmo restored the two goal margin with a great bullet header from a well placed Jack Blatchford corner. Blatchford also provided the fourth and final goal as his free-kick was headed home by Reece Connolly. A great all round team effort by Aldershot who deservedly defeated 3 times winners Meon Milton 4-1.

Shearer backs Pompey

England and Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer is backing Portsmouth's Sol Campbell to do something he never did as a player - be the winning captain in an FA Cup Final.

Shearer, who was the Newcastle captain when they lost in The Final to double-winning Arsenal in 1998 and then again the following season to Manchester United, believes Harry Redknapp's men will be too strong for Championship side Cardiff.

"I think it will be Portsmouth," he said.

"It has not been a year for the favourites, but I think they will have enough to beat Cardiff."

Portsmouth were the only Premier League team in the last four of this year's Cup and Shearer believes the unpredictable nature of this year's competition, summed up best by Barnsley's remarkable victories over Liverpool and Chelsea, has been a fantastic advert for the world's oldest footballing spectacle.

"It has been a great year for the underdogs," added Shearer.

"What it does do is give them all hope for next season."

"I bet some other clubs are looking at Portsmouth and Cardiff, who have a done a great job to get to Wembley, and will be thinking 'what a chance we missed to get to The FA Cup Final.'

"The good thing is that next year they will all be thinking that if it happened last year, maybe it will happen for us this season."

FA lands award

The FA received a prestigious accolade at the Sport Industry Awards on Thursday evening, for its work in transforming perceptions of Women's and Girls' Football.

Nominated for the award of 'Best Promotion of a Sport by a Governing Body,' there was competition from the ATP, British Cycling, British Horseracing Authority, NFL and RFU but The FA were presented with the honour at the Battersea Evolution in Battersea Park.

England Women's Head Coach Hope Powell MBE and Morag Taylor, The FA's Marketing Manager for Women's Football, collected the honour from England cricket ace Kevin Pietersen.

The award was granted due to what The FA has done in the past year with regards to the Girls United campaign, which was essential to improving perceptions of Women's and Girls' football with fans and increasing participation in the game.

Speaking about the award, The FA's Chairman Lord Triesman said: "This is a tremendous award for all of those involved at The FA.

"I know a huge amount of work has gone into this and I'd like to congratulate everybody on their efforts and this significant achievement."

The FA's Chief Executive Brian Barwick added: "This is an important area of the game that we have been committed to for a number of years now and promotion and development of Women's and Girls' football is something that has been vitally important.

"We are committed to the continued development of Women's and Girls' football and I am delighted for everyone involved that The FA won this award."

There are now well over 1.1 million females playing football on a regular basis in England, of which 150,000 are affiliated players in schools and clubs. It remains the number one team sport for females in this country.

Promotion and PR has been vital to changing what fans think of the game, and England's qualification for the World Cup in China last year was the perfect platform to show just what the game has to offer.

With high profile coverage in all national newspapers, live coverage of every England match on the BBC, and huge interest on TheFA.com dedicated China 2007 pillar - the game has gained more followers than ever.

However, it was not only the elite teams that formed part of the PR plan as the domestic game and the County FAs also played an important part of bringing more people into the game.
