Warsash Wasps at Wembley!

The Warsash Wasps, along with representatives from Crofton Saints and Winchester City Flyers, were lucky enough to take part in a national football festival held at Wembley Stadium recently. The day started at Northwick Park where the team were introduced to each other. Due to many girls from Warsash being on holiday, the team was comprised of players from Warsash Wasps, Crofton Saints and Winchester City Flyers.

The girls all got on very well, but found the games tough in the morning having not played together as a team before. They also had great fun trying out the various challenges and inflatable games which were set up in the park. They also took the opportunity to have their photo taken with the Community Shield.

In the afternoon the girls were transferred to Wembley Stadium. There was great excitement as they walked through the Players Entrance and emerged from the tunnel onto the pitch - what an amazing stadium!

After a big group photo was taken of all the teams, the girls waited for their turn to step onto the pitch. They walked past the cheering crowd and had a team photo taken with Sir Geoff Hurst.

The girls were fantastic in the last match of the day. Jessica from Warsash Wasps scored twice, almost emulating Sir Geoff, and Phoebe had a number of great chances saved brilliantly by the opposing goalkeeper. After the final whistle the girls shook hands with their opponents and then walked up the steps to the Royal Box to receive their medals. There was still more to come as 2 of the girls were interviewed for the CBBC Sportsround programme.

Hampshire Youth Games Review:

More than 1700 youngsters from across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight enjoyed a two-day festival of sport at the Hampshire Games in Aldershot on Friday 18th and Saturday 19th June 2010.

The Parallel Games saw 5 local authorities take part for girls football, with all ages from school years 7 to 10 taking part. It was a very fun atmosphere with all of the teams enjoying playing competitive matches. Portsmouth local authority won the final of this competition with positive feedback all round.

Representing their local authorities a mix of Year 4 Girls took to the football fields on the Saturday in a fun and competitive environment. It came to a dramatic close with a semi-final and the final ending in a penalty shoot-out. However after a hard fought and determined effort from all the girls, Portsmouth were victorious.

From this many of the players will go on to join teams and compete in the 2010/11 season. Local authorities were also given details of the Girls Development Day coming up in August along with a few players being scouted to attend the Hampshire Girls Centre of Excellence trials.

A very successful day!
